TRAFFIC SECTION
A Sergeant and a Officer
has been assigned to the section for many years. Traffic has many
duties including administering the STEP Program and other grant programs
relating to traffic enforcement; fleet maintenance to include necessary
equipment to be maintained in cruisers such as mobile data terminals, traffic
lasers and radar units. Parking control and traffic enforcement efforts include
overseeing towed vehicle dispositions; conducting vehicle inspections on garbage
trucks, taxis, and tow trucks; investigating hit skip accidents; placing speed
trailers; and planning and organizing special events and overtime details.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program is a problem
specific initiative designed to enforce traffic laws in high crash locations in
order to reduce traffic accidents. Other duties include special event planning
and coordination such as parades and festivals. Of significance in 2008 were
the Downtown Cruise-In, Miss Ohio Parade, Gus Macker Basketball Tournament,
NASCAR Truck Race and the Bi-Centennial Parade.
The section has two Parking Control Officers and one part
time Meter Maintenance position to oversee 400 parking meters which are
maintained in the downtown area. Parking Control Officers also monitor
handicapped spaces and fire lanes throughout the city and are trained to place
division speed trailers throughout the city as a speed prevention tool.
