DETECTIVE SECTION
The section consists of two units with 8 detectives
assigned either to the Major Crimes Unit or the Juvenile Unit. Detectives
are
primarily responsible for the investigation of crimes classified as Uniform
Crime Report Part 1 offenses which are
homicide, rape, burglary, robbery,
aggravated assault, larceny and motor vehicle thefts. One Major Crimes Detective
is
primarily assigned to investigate financial and computer crimes which have
become an increasing problem. The Juvenile
Unit investigates offenses involving
juveniles, coordinating with agencies such as Richland County Juvenile Court,
Children’s
Services and many other agencies involved with our youth residents.
One Juvenile Detective is primarily assigned to work
directly with Children’s
Services on neglect and abuse cases.
The learning process continues in relation to new
technology available to our detectives. OHLEG, I LINK, SORN, CODIS,
and A.F.I.S.
are just some of the tools being used in the fight against crime. The Detective
Bureau assigned 979 cases for
investigation this year a .08% decrease in the
number of assigned cases as compared to 2007. Investigations resulted in
240 arrests. 119 adults were arrested and charged as were 113 juveniles. Cases
cleared by arrest accounted for 33% of
cases cleared by arrest. The Juvenile
Unit handled 413 cases, their clearance rate by arrest was 44%. Major Crimes
were
assigned 485 cases, resulting in a clearance percentage of 22%.
