YOUTH INITIATIVES
Recognizing the importance of prevention efforts
as well as enforcement in reducing crime, especially juvenile delinquency,
the
Mansfield Police Division is involved in, coordinates or collaborates in many
initiatives focusing on the high delinquency
periods of 3:00pm to 9:00pm.
Police Athletic League—
Approximately 2500 youth participated
in the PAL (Police Athletic League) activities and programs including PAL
baseball,
basketball, boxing, and football. These programs also included A.C.E.,
Leadership Club, Golden Age Club, PAL Shutterbugs,
Club 36, and M.A.C Club. The
PAL neighborhood study centers and computer labs are equipped with educational
software,
homework assistance, and reading skill programs. The Division was
awarded a PAL Youth Leadership Grant which was
attended regularly by 10 students
who did various community services/projects around the area including, litter
pick-up,
gardening, senior citizen visits, and food collection.

D.A.R.E.—
The DARE program served over 380
students in the 6th grade at eleven area schools, public and private. The
students
participated in Drug awareness classes, poster contests, and the annual
DARE Olympics which was held at the PAL gym.
Approximately 80 students
participated in the Olympics which was staffed by 20 volunteers including
members of MPD,
RCSO, and APA. Officer Shay is the Divisions DARE officer and
was elected to the State DARE Board during this year's
conference.

Safety Town—
Safety Town saw many changes. The
location was moved from Brinkerhoff School to Woodland School which posed many
challenges to the staff. The staff managed the challenges well and successfully
put 203 kids through the educational and
awareness program. Ginger Antrican took
over as Safety Town Director and did a fantastic job of managing the staff and
the
challenges of the new location. Safety Town also entered a float in the
city's Bicentennial Parade.

Explorers—
Officer Lumadue oversees the
Explorers after taking over for Officer Bond half way through the year due to
his transfer to
METRICH task force. There are 27 members and 3 civilian
advisers. Members range in age from 11-27 years. They
participated in the State
Explorer Competition and traveled to Colorado where they competed in the
National Explorer
Competition. The Explorers with the assistance of Reserve and
Auxiliary Officers parked over 8,000 vehicles at the Haunted
Prison,
their yearly fundraising event and raised over $15,000. The Explorers also
assisted at every parade and special event
including NASCAR, Cruise-in, and
Superbike. Officer Lumadue and his advisors put together a recruitment flyer
that features
the new Division’s cruiser design.
