Chief Kenneth Coontz began his career as a patrol officer in 1993. During his career he has served as a Community Policing Officer, a K-9 handler, Traffic Unit Supervisor, Defensive Tactics and Firearms Instructor, Watch Commander, Drug Task Force Commander, Patrol Bureau Commander and Detective Bureau Commander. In 2005, he was promoted to Sergeant, then promoted again in 2009 to the rank of Lieutenant after graduating from the Police Executive Leadership College. In 2010 he took over as the METRICH Drug Task Force Commander. In May of 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and given the added duties of overseeing both the Patrol and the Detective Bureau’s. On December 13, 2013 he was selected by Mayor Timothy Theaker as Chief of Police for the Mansfield Division of Police. Chief Coontz has volunteered for many community activities and boards such as Big Brothers, CACY, Shop with a Cop Program, D.A.R.E. Olympics, and coaching youth sports in baseball, softball, and basketball. During Chief Kenneth Coontz’ s career he has received the Legion of Merit award, 21 Special Commendations, 8 Letters of Recognition, 2 Top Cop awards, Military Service award, Supervisor of the Year in 2009, and he was presented the Veteran’s Life Saving Award. Chief Coontz has proven his ability to excel in every area of policing while keeping the connection with the community that he has sworn to protect.
